Chile: 40 Years On | Scottish Network Organising Meeting

2nd Branch Meeting

Friday July 26th | 6.00pm | Edinburgh City Chambers| Royal Mile

Nationwide network to lead on Chile coup anniversary commemorations

“Once again we ask our Scottish friends, workers, artists and citizens to work with us to commemorate the terrible events that brought us together in 1973, we know that from these horrific events in Chile there grew an abundance of creativity in arts, music, poetry, theatre and dance, we may have been exiled but we were never silenced”

Sonia Leal & Valentina Montoya Martinez & Tricia Munoz.

You are invited to take part in the 2nd  Chile:40 Years On | Scotland Branch Meeting at the City Chambers in Edinburgh, the branch will feed into the national network and publicise events taking place all over the UK leading up to September 11th 2013.

This is a time to catch up and see where folk are at with their events, so far we have events happening in both August and September (see below) and in Edinburgh and in Glasgow. This is draft and there are more events to add as there are many more in the early stages of organisation so keep watching this space and set the dates for various events!

We have set up a Facebook group page where we will also send out invites to events, if you do not have a Facebook account we will send you regular newsletter updates which you can send out to all your friends.

It is imperative that this information is sent out far and wide, we do not have any money to publicise so are relying on your / our networks to get the word out there.

Should you require any background information for your event feel free to get in touch as we have a wealth of talent already in the group who are raring to go!  Our Chair Cllr Gordon Munro would be happy to speak at your event and Sonia Leal our Co-odinator can upload your event to the national website / twitter / Facebook.

The aims of the Chile:40 Years On Scottish Branch will be to:-

to highlight the role of the Chile 40 Years On UK network

·   to produce and facilitate memorial and cultural events and initiatives

·   to acknowledge the  thousands of Scottish folk who generously gave to the solidarity movements, thereby saving many Chilean lives

·   to highlight the survival and the new life of the ‘adopted’ Chileans in different parts of the UK

·   to help create a critical mass of awareness of the significance of the Chilean coup and the subsequent repression and solidarity actions not only for Chile but for us here in Scotland, elsewhere in the UK and for the rest of the world.

The Chile:40 Years On Network plans a series of events leading up to and following the 11th September anniversary that will recognise the support shown for the regime’s victims and the support spearheaded by British labour movement which still stands as a blueprint for international solidarity.

Events in August & September 2013

WHEN: 2 – 16 August @ 14:00 – 15:45

Tejas Verdes – was a torture and death camp in Chile from 1973, following the coup by General Pinochet.  It was previously a military engineering school run by Manuel Contreras, who became the head of Pinochet’s secret police, the DINA.  Before that, it was a sea-side resort for rich people from the capital, Santiago.  In 1973, the torture was carried out in the former music room. The play tells, with poetic beauty and overwhelming love, the story of a woman who was taken there, tortured and disappeared.  It is her story, but also the story of those people who encountered her and were involved, in one way or another, in what happened to her.  In 2013, Tejas Verdes is once more a military engineering school.
